Why were you inspired to do this?
Running 26.2 miles is not something everyone wants to do or can do, but its the one constant that has been on my 'to do' list for years. Its such a well known challenge to push you to the upper limits of your endurance physically, requiring dedication to your training and a positive mental attitude. Knowing that you would in tip top physical shape was also a great motivation.
What were 3 things you did to make this happen?
Just do it - bite the bullet and enter. I entered using a charity place which meant fund raising and knowing you had more than just your pride at stake. At the time I had more free time due to moving countries (from London to New York) and thought it was a case of its now or never.
Training. Lots of running!! Being relatively new to New York it was a great way to get to know the city.
Enlist a support network. Comparing notes and checking in with people within my social network or charity team mates.
How did you feel once you had accomplished this?
Exhilarated!! I had wanted to run the entire way, but I put no pressure on myself to acheive a particular time. My mental attitude was that if I didn't acheive it (i.e. running the entire way) this time I would do the following year. Taking the pressure off myself helped me just to focus on enjoying the experience. The crowd were amazing and I enjoyed every minute. Towards the end I found my steps getting heavier and I really don't think I couild have gone any further, but I made it over the line in 4.29.
