Hiking the Milford Track in New Zealand
Travel & Leisure: Australasia

Why were you inspired to do this?

My husband was the inspiration. He is a very avid hiker and he is determined to do all the Great Walks in New Zealand. The Milford Track has always been on his MUST DO list. NZ is also such a great place to visit.

What were 3 things you did to make this happen?

Researched whether it was feasible to do the hike in the off season (May) as we couldn't go any earlier plus it is very difficult to get a place during the peak season since it's such a popular hike.

We had to call around various transport operators to organise our transport from Queenstown to the start of the hike as not all operators run their service during the off-peak season.

Made sure we had all the right gear for the weather conditions.

How did you feel once you had accomplished this?

Fantastic. It was a 53km hike and the scenery was breathtaking. There were beautiful waterfulls and rivers and it was just stunning. We had spectacular views from the top of Mackinnon Pass and there was even a little bit of snow. We only had one day of rain which was an added bonus! We felt fit and healthy at the end but in need of a nice hot shower!

Additional notes and tips:

We flew into Christchurch and spent a night there and then drove to Queenstown for one night at Peppers Beacon (highly recommended). Topline Tours transported us from Queenstown to Te Anau where we stayed one night and then Te Anau Cruises took us from Te Anau to Te Anau Downs where we boarded a boat to cruise 2 hours up the lake to the start of the hike. We then did the same in reverse.

I did this hike myself waaay back in 1987 - I spent 18 months living, working and travelling all over NZ and had the good fortune to meet a couple of great guys who encouraged our troupe to do this hike. I was my first hike ever..and honestly, the last one I did for years! Yet I loved it...and this brought back so many happy memories of that time.

Milford Sound is an awesome spot. Haven't done the track but heard it's wicked. Thanks for your story.
