Bike ride along the Erie Canal
Travel & Leisure

Why were you inspired to do this?

In 1999, the woman I was dating suggested bike touring in Ireland. It sounded great, even though I hadn't been on a bike in many years, and never on a multi-day tour. After riding from Cork to Galway over two weeks, I was hooked and wanted to keep going. The value of the dollar fell after that, so I started looking for opportunities in the US. I am a history buff and the fame of the Erie Canal intrigued me.

What were 3 things you did to make this happen?

I signed up for the 8-day ride sponsored by Parks & Trails New York

I rode my bike to work each day to get prepared for being in the saddle. It was 10 miles each way.

I bought a new tent

How did you feel once you had accomplished this?

It was a great trip and I felt excited, ready to seek out other similar rides. I wanted to turn bike touring into a personal annual experience.
