Richard Petty Performance Driving Experience

Drive a NASCAR race car
Sports & Adventure: Adrenaline

Pure Horsepower adrenaline

Why were you inspired to do this?

I grew up watching Formula 1 racing on TV and like other kids dreamed of driving a race car. The dream faded as I went on to do other things, until I heard about the Richard Petty Performance Driving School at Disney World. The dream of driving a race car was now possible!

What were 3 things you did to make this happen?

Travel to Disney - Fortunately this was the easy part as my company sent me to a conference at the Disney Resort. My friend Charles and I added a day onto our stay to go to Disney Speedway.

Reserve a spot - Thankfully we were able to get a booking for both of us.

Drive, Drive, Drive. - This was the fun part and I can honestly say a huge adrenalin rush.

How did you feel once you had accomplished this?

We signed up to do the solo experience of 8 Laps around the One Mile Disney Speedway. To prepare us, they took us around the track in a van. This was wild as the van struggled at 60 mph on the track and we would go twice the speed! At each corner, there were pylons where we were to come off the accelerator and get back on once we rounded the corner. Another race car would lead us around to show us the race line and we would need to stay 3 car lengths off the Bumper. They would wave a flag if we got too far back, or the driver in front would wave if we got too close! Simple, right?!! When it came my turn, I jumped over the fence and jumped in the car, Dukes of Hazzard style. They strapped me in and started the engine. 800 Horse Power certainly gets your attention. It was awesome! They warned us to not burn out but the torque on the clutch was so tight, I almost stalled. It was hard not to burn a little rubber. First, second gear through Pit Lane, then on the track, third then fourth. My first lap I averaged 117MPH, then each lap the Pace Driver built up the speed. The car cornered as if it were on rails, I could totally feel the G's as we increased speed through the 8 Laps. I wanted to go faster. The key advice they gave us was to trust the car! I topped out at an average of 125 MPH. The amazing thing was how in control and confident I felt as we did the laps. I was absolutely shaking after I got out of the car. I could not believe I had just averaged 125 MPH around a One Mile Track. Check out the Video below. Just watching it got my heart racing!!

Funny was just talking to Charles and he reminded me he did get the fastest time on the day. Ouch not all stories have a happy ending... plus he got to pass someone on the track!

English Top Gear is great.(BBC version) Favorite episode is when the English boys came to US and drove Cars across South, to New Orleans. One Guy had NASCAR $ucks and they nearly got killed. Will look out for your goal.

Thanks for posting this - it reminded me to post my goal of driving a Bugatti Veyron on a track somewhere. I'm a Top Gear Fan (the REAL Top Gear, English version, not the pathetic US attempt at Top Gear ;-) and my favorite bit ever was of James May driving the Veyron....

Just writing the story made me want to do it again! I so want to take others to do this.

That had to be Big Fun.
